Contrary to popular opinion, editing requires more than just obsessive attention to detail—although that certainly is a good starting point!
When I edit any form of writing, whether a book-length manuscript, a report, or thesis, my first question is simple: ‘Is it clearly structured?’ If you have asked me to edit a non-fiction work, I check that you have developed and expressed your ideas in a clear, logical fashion. If I am editing fiction, I look for characters whose motivations makes sense, a plot without any holes, and a consistent style. At this stage, I liaise with you to discuss any concerns I have about the text, and to negotiate any changes I might propose.
Next, I ask myself, ‘Does this writing engage the reader?’ Over the years I have learned many techniques to stimulate, challenge and tantalise your readers. I’ll suggest some changes which will take your book to the next level, and keep your readers turning those pages. Again, I’ll discuss these ideas with you before proceeding.
The final stage involves closer attention to grammar and spelling. There are plenty of critics out there these days, so it’s important to eliminate as many errors as possible.
During the editing process I normally use the ‘Track Changes’ function in Microsoft Word, so you can review my suggestions, then accept or reject them. If you intend to self-publish, I also consider the layout of your text, to ensure that the finished product will look like a book, rather than just a manuscript.
After you have reviewed my suggested changes, I read through the document one more time, to ensure that the final result still draws the reader in, and to pick up those inevitable errors that creep in during revision.
If you would like me to edit your book, email me a extract of at least 2,000 words, and an outline of your book’s structure. In return, I’ll give you a sample edit, a firm quotation, and a timeframe for completing the work. For shorter pieces, send me the entire file, and I’ll let you know how much it will cost. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
